Broadway box office slips as winter ticket prices drop

With a lean schedule and many productions offering 2-for-1 tickets during the annual Broadway Week promotion, the Broadway box office was down 24% in the week ending Jan. 22, with 23 performances totaling $25,835,362. Attendance of 204,847 was down 17% from the previous week when 29 shows hit the shelves.

Despite the overall decrease, the percentage of seats occupied remained at around 93% of capacity, in line with the previous week. However, the average ticket price dropped significantly — those 2-for-1 tickets kicked in — with an average price of $126, down a full $10 from the previous week.

Broadway Week’s annual winter promotion (which actually runs for several weeks) seems to have had an effect – 18 of the 23 shows were booked at 90% or more, even as ticket prices dropped. Fill all their seats MJ (Revenue of $1,654,435) and The skim of the opera ($2,227,185).

The only preview program photos from home featuring Nathan Lane, Danny Burstein and Zoë Wanamaker, sold approximately 92% of the seats at Studio 54 and sold for $413,288 with an average ticket price of $79.69. It starts on February 9.

In the season to date, Broadway has grossed $1,062,714,005 with a total attendance of 8,172,023 at a seat load of approximately 87%.
