Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese worked on his adaptation of The flower moon killers for years now. Based on the journalist’s book of the same name David Grann, the story “traces the investigation into the serial killings that plagued the Osage Nation during the 1920s after oil was discovered on their land. Lily Gladstone, who grew up on the Blackfoot Reservation, recently sat down with Variety to talk about the Sundance premiere of her most recent film, Fantasy danceand talked about what it was like making the film The flower moon killersand work with her co-stars and legendary director Martin Scorsese. She explained:

“You have those superstar moments, and I feel like you’ve had so many moments so far in these wonderful movies that I have to do,” Gladstone said. “The name is something different from the person. When you’re sitting down working on the scene, it’s just two actors. I’ve been so lucky that everyone is a committed artist at what they do. That was a really refreshing thing to see. Everyone is looking for the truth about what is happening.”

He went on to reveal how the film evolved while Scorsese was on the reservation and was open to getting to know the people there. He allowed him to inform the project that he had decided to carry out. Scorsese worked closely with the real-life Osage Nation to ensure that his film adequately represented the community. Osage Nation head Geoffrey Standing Bear also served as a consultant on the film. The Osage Nation ended up positively changing “Flower Moon” from what Scorsese had originally planned.

“Work is better when you let the world inform work. It was very refreshing how production got involved with the [Osage Nation] Community. As the community warmed to our presence, the more the community became involved in the film. It’s a different movie than that [Scorsese] came in to make it almost entirely because of what the community had to say about how it was made and what it stood for.

It’s so nice to hear that the director was open to the changes that needed to be made to make the story as authentic as possible. Can’t wait to see the final design.

The flower moon killers will be released on Apple TV+ later this year.
