James Gunn says he will be thoughtful when casting DC projects and use new actors mixed with familiar faces

Fans have been cautiously optimistic about the big change that happened a few months ago as writer/director/producer James Gunn took over DC Studios. He has already made several announcements and has immediately set to work creating plans for the future of the DCEU, hopefully in the same way that Kevin Feige created a universe for Marvel fans.

Some fans are skeptical, as DC has famously made more misses than hits, and while Gunn has made many of the movies we love in each of the comic book universes, it’s yet to be seen what will come out. A Twitter user named Kollin Leisinger took to the platform to plead with Gunn not to recycle his favorite actors, who we’ve already seen in more than one of his projects, to pitch the big new projects he’s been teasing for DC. , saying:

“please don’t encourage #GotG cast to follow you to the DCU. Find new actors who can create brilliant characters and forge new memories for audiences, instead of swimming in the same muddy pond. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. Reborn, don’t reuse. Please.”

Gunn replied to the Tweet, saying:

“We have hundreds of roles to play. As I always have, some will be brand new faces, some will be actors I’ve worked with before, and some will be actors I’ve never worked with. What matters most is that the actor fits the role and they are easy to work with.

While this isn’t a promise of anything, it makes sense that while we might see some familiar actors, it will open up the opportunity for many newcomers. If he’s trying to build a Marvel-like universe, there’s going to be a ton of characters to pick from, and I think Gunn is looking for some confidence that he’s going to make the right choices when he picks these projects.

I think he’s done a good job in the past with the films he’s made, and I like his sense of humor and playfulness along with serious storytelling, so I think he’s going to make a DCEU unlike anything he’s attempted in the past.

Anyway, I think it’s too early to criticize. Let’s wait and see what comes to mind. He might surprise us.
