We live in a strange world where even cartoon candies can cause controversy. The M&M’s brand has made a few changes over the past year with its “spokecandies,” including the introduction of a purple M&M and the green one that has had some design changes. I don’t know, I don’t pay much attention to what happens with the M&M’s characters, I just eat the candy.

However, due to the backlash, M&M’s has decided to temporarily retire its M&M testimonial personas and replace them with a new marketing campaign that will be led by Saturday night live veteran Maya Rodolfo. Given the timing of the announcement, I imagine M&M’s will launch this new campaign with a spot during the next Super Bowl.
This is the announcement released on social media:
“America, let’s talk about it. In the last year, we’ve made a few changes to our beloved mouthpieces. We weren’t sure anyone would notice. And we definitely didn’t think it would break the internet. But now we understand it — even the shoes of a candy they can be polarizing, which was the last thing M&M’s wanted, since our purpose is to bring people together.
“Therefore, we have decided to take an indefinite hiatus from spokespeople. In their place, we are proud to introduce a new spokesperson America can agree upon: beloved Maya Rudolph. We are confident that Mrs. Rudolph will stand up for power of fun to create a world where everyone feels they belong.”
