The only new major studio release this weekend is thriller Stage 6 and Screen Gems. Absence which grossed $760,000 from Showtimes as of 4pm yesterday at 2,650 locations. The film that belongs to the creative people behind it The micro hit from SonySearch, 3,000 theaters are expected to open in the mid-single digits.
Equivalent to Search, Absence was made on a very tight budget of $7 million before P&A.
Absence was executive produced by Search‘s Timur Bekmambetov, produced by Sev Ohanian and Natalie Qasabian and narrated by Ohanian from the previous title and Aneesh Chaganty, the latter who directed the first title. Absence Directed by Nicholas D. Johnson and Will Merrick. The picture follows a young woman as she tries to locate her missing mother using online tools. The stars of Storm Reid and Nia Long.
20th Century Studios/Disney/Lighthouses Avatar: the way of water expected to remain strong with at least $20 million by weekend 6. avatar 2 ends week 5 with a running total of $578.2 million. This weekend, the James Cameron-directed sequel will earn more than $598 million. The next event that should be on the all-time list of top brown films at the local box office is The incredible things 2 ($608.5 million), which currently ranks 12th.
Universal/Atomic Monsters/Blumhouses M3GAN ends week 2 with an estimated total of $63.4 million, second week with $25 million. The third weekend of the Gerard Johnstone-directed PG-13 genre title is expected to stay strong at $15 million.
by Sony A man named Otto finished its third week (first in wide release at 3,802) with $20.1 million for a running total of $26.3 million. Weekend 4 is expected to cost around $10 million.
Universal/DreamWorks Animations Puss in Boots: The Last Wish also got to see another big grave after his MLK weekend. The fifth frame is expected to cost around $10 million. Week 4 ends with an estimated $22 million and a running US gross of $114.9 million. The availability of the film on PVOD does not slow down the turnstiles.
