“George. A journey of Coque Malla’: Reunion between friends

The Spanish music documentary has carved out an important path among the public in recent years. Since the resounding success of ‘Eso que tú me das’ in 2020, with which Jordi Évole greeted Pau Donés heartily, his popularity has not stopped growing. In the last year it has been possible to see a tribute to the band Tequila with ‘Tequila. Sex, drugs and rock & roll’ or the great Joaquín Sabina in ‘Sentiendo lo mucho’ (one of Goya’s favorite films for best documentary). Now is the time to delve into Coque Malla’s life and work in ‘Jorge’. A journey of Coque Mallà.

“George. A journey of Coque Malla’: Reunion between friends

It concerns a clear homage to the singer and actor. The sisters Cristina and María José Martín Barcelona, called Lasdelcine, this is the name of their production company, they use their experience in music documentary on the one hand, since they have already directed the tribute to Fito and Fitipaldis in 2021 with ‘Fito. 20 years and one night’; as well as their relationship with the Madrid artist himself, whom they conducted in ‘Irrepetible’, a concert with which Malla had guests of the highest level.

Naturally, that bond, along with his informative sense of non-fiction cinema, makes this proposition a long tour of his life and work, from when he was a minor and had to be accompanied by his parents when he began in the artistic world, to his consolidation as a soloistpassing, of course, through his long period as leader of Los Ronaldos, between 1987 and 1998. The film has the participation of both Malla himself and friends of the singer, such as Iván Ferreiro, Dani Martín, Ariel Rot, Leonor Watling, Ray Loriga or Alberto San Juan; as well as the appearance of relatives, such as his brother Miguel.

A tribute to the artist. An extensive review of his career

The Martín Barcelona tandem follows the conventional line of the statement documentary, with moments full of emotion intended more for the joy of the artist’s fans than for the public unfamiliar with his work. This is a custom made movie by Malla, who allows you to better appreciate his hard work as leader of Los Ronaldoswith emblematic songs such as ‘At night’, ‘Sí, sí’, ‘Si os vais’ or ‘I can’t live without you’, one of the flagships of both the band and Malla himself.

In addition to showing his triumphs, the film shows the hard times that the son of actors Gerardo Malla and Amparo Valle also had to face, especially when Los Ronaldos broke up and Malla had to carve out a solo career, proving he didn’t mind starting over. These results are guided precisely by the aforementioned testimonies of friends, experts and family members, who offer a close-up image of the singer and actor.

“George. A journey of Coque Mallà is above all a documentary for enthusiasts. This does not mean that the lay public cannot appreciate it or that it can serve as an approach to an artist who has marked several generations. A reunion between friends that exudes a certain aroma of nostalgia, as if it were a meeting of former students. A feeling that allows you to enjoy a work that continues to consolidate the Martín Barcelona sisters as expert musical filmmakers.

Note: 7

The best: It has great vibes and its own nostalgic touch.

Worse: He is too complacent with Malla’s life and work, there is no time for chiaroscuro.
