Since, in 2007, Briton Dean Craig wowed as screenwriter with black comedy ‘A Death Funeral’following its American remake, seems to have remained in an eternal cycle of celebrations, from weddings (“A Wedding of Death”, “A Few Less Men”, “Love. Wedding. Random”) to honeymoons (“The Honeymoon ‘).Failing to complete the famous BBC (must make a film on baptisms and another on communions), Craig delves into more swampy ground again, with “An Inheritance of Death”.

‘A legacy of death’ unites two unique protagonists, Toni Collette and Anna Faris. Both embody two sisters who have inherited a canteen that belonged to their father. and who run the risk of losing it, given the debts they have. Her situation could change since her aunt, a bitter and spinster woman, has terminal cancer and has no direct heirs. Both decide to go and see her and help her, with the aim of convincing their aunt to put them in her will. The idea seems simple… it’s just that his other two cousins have thought of it too, who, apparently, enjoy a higher income. A race against time to see who is the best heir.
The premise comes really quickly and delivers what you can expect from this type of production. Indeed, Craig once again delivers easy jokes, scat gags and stale comments that are hard to believe are present in a 2022 comedy. and that could have been a sour portrayal of people’s meanness. What keeps the film from being a dud is its cast. Toni Collette and Anna Faris offer a fabulous tandem. Both are capable of defending and making the audience laugh, despite the situations bordering on the absurd (when they don’t want to).
A weak comedy that saves an excellent cast

They’re not the only ones, really. ‘A Death’s Funeral’ has a cast in a state of grace. Joining Collette and Faris is David Duchovny bringing out the side of him closest to ‘Californication’, albeit in a much more beastly tone. He is accompanied by Rosemarie DeWitt and Ron Livingston, a real-life married couple, who play a couple in crisis. The five relaunch a forgettable production and manage to create a certain complicity with the public. This is what makes the film more enjoyable than Craig’s latest work. Special mention for the great Kathleen Turner.
“A legacy of death” reveals nothing. It’s more, its old-fashioned humor doesn’t invite you to enjoy it. However, the savoir-faire of her cast manages to save the furniture, leaving funny scenes that manage to erupt a few laughs. This makes it clear that Craig proves to be a good director of actors. Now, it would not be bad for him to pass his celebratory phase or, at least, change chips if he dares with baptisms and communions.
Note: 6
The best: Its cast is wonderful.
Worse: Its storyline is weak and its jokes wouldn’t be funny if it weren’t for its actors.
