‘Ocho apellidos vascos’ has become a box office phenomenon for Spanish cinema. Its sequel, ‘Ocho apellidos catalanes’ once again managed to attract audiences to theaters and break records. Quite unexpectedly, Universal Pictures has announced that the third installment of the franchise will be released in theaters this year: ‘Eight Moroccan Surnames’. We already have a first trailer:
Dani Rovira and Clara Lago let Rafa and Amaia rest, and they give the lead role to Michelle Jenner and Julián López. They will be accompanied by María Ramos and Elena Irureta. The plot of the film centers on the character of Irureta, Carmen, who wants to fulfill her husband’s last wish: to go to Morocco and recover the ‘Sardinete’, the first ship of her company. She will be accompanied by her daughter Begoña (Jenner). And also from Begoña’s ex, Guillermo (López), who joined because he wants to win her back. In Morocco, in addition to the culture shock that served as a staple for this franchise, they will also discover a nice surprise: Carmen’s husband has had another daughter (Ramos).

Not even Emilio Martínez Lázaro returns to directing, handing over the baton to Álvaro Fernández Armero (“Si yo fuera rico”). The film, formerly titled ‘Almost Family’, was shot in Morocco, Cantabria and Madrid. It has once again Telecinco Cinema behind it. Ghislain Barrois, CEO of the production company, explains why this story fits the DNA of the franchise: “It perfectly satisfied three essential elements: overcoming cultural prejudices through humor, the tenderness of a romantic comedy and the presence of a certain political dimension”. Barrois says they waited until it was shot to see if it was “the heir to the saga”. Álvaro Fernández Armero explains that the story of him is carried forward by “conservative and modest characters” with “unfounded prejudices” towards a culture unknown to them. “It’s a film about that ignorance that makes us judge and fill ourselves with prejudices before we know what we’re rejecting. Something almost none of us is exempt from and which is usually easier to see in others than in ourselves”, To add. When the film was titled ‘Almost family’, Mediaset Spain indicated Diego San José, Borja Echevarría and Daniel Castro as screenwriters. Diego San José, who wrote the screenplay for the previous ones together with Borja Cobeaga, commented Chirping that the author of the libretto of ‘Eight Moroccan surnames’ is Daniel Castro.
The box office bar is very high
‘Eight Moroccan Surnames’ will be released in Spanish cinemas on December 1st. It has a tremendously high bar. ‘Ocho apellidos vascos’ is the second highest-grossing film in the history of our country with 55.38 million euros and almost 9.5 million spectators. ‘Ocho apellidos catalanes’ is the seventh highest-grossing film in history with 35.48 million euros, and was recently overtaken by ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’.
