When did you decide on the ending?
David Schulner: I think as soon as we knew we were going to break up. Peter and I thought we still had a few more years ahead. We certainly had the stories and the passion to tell them. So it wasn’t until we were told it was going to be season five that we thought, “Oh, I think we better start thinking about an ending.”

We flash forward and see Luna giving that speech, just like her father did years before. Was there any discussion between the writers about showing Max or anyone else in the hospital in the future?
David Schulner: Absolutely. We definitely thought, “Should we do this?” And then we immediately thought, “We shouldn’t.” Seeing our characters in vintage makeup seemed like the wrong way to go.

The ending really gives off a spinoff vibe. Was this your intention?
Peter Horton: Yes, we are open to this. We are open to this. David said we’re sorry it ended prematurely so there is a way to go if anyone wants to.

These days, we have a variety of endings for characters. Max and Elizabeth’s future is a bit uncertain. Max says he will take time off to be with his daughter and Elizabeth will take over as medical director. It is unclear if they will end up together. Do they end up together?
Peter Horton: What a good question. In fact, I love the question so much that I think it should be a question again.

David Schulner: Indeed, we filmed a response. So we thought: “It’s much better if you ask this question, you can participate, you still have one wish”.

I know you said you had a lot of stories to tell. Was there anything you couldn’t delve into in the final season that you really wanted?
David Schulner: Eric Mannheimerwhoever wrote the book, keep emailing me,”new amsterdam I have to deal with this medical history. And I’m like, “Eric, we’re done. I’d like to. We will certainly take care of this when we restart.”

Peter Horton: We have also established a relationship with the World Health Organization. They reached out to us which was high praise. But they’re also constantly throwing stories at us, things that are more global. From that perspective, there’s a lot more story to tell and from our character’s point of view. David has created these rich, rich, interesting, full-bodied characters and we don’t seem to explore them enough. There’s so much more to talk to them about.

So if NBC, Peacock, or any member of the NBCUniversal family calls, you’re good to go. new amsterdam?
Peter Horton: Absolutely.

David Schulner: Criminal minds it was restarted two years after its cancellation. That’s why we’re here.
