We recently reported how Kosinski had to jump through hoops to shoot in a top-secret hangar for the Darkstar sequence in the film, and now in a recent interview with Deadline, the director shares what happened when he stumbled upon something that It wasn’t meant civilians saw him when he was scouting filming for the film:
The first thing I did after I got this job was fly on the Teddy Roosevelt aircraft carrier. I hopped in a Greyhound, which isn’t the fast jet, but I was able to fly out there and get the tether, and then I launched the catapult off the jet. When you direct the film, you kind of become a “subject matter expert,” which is the Navy’s term — the EMS — on whatever subject you want. So, I got to live that dream of being in the Navy for a couple years. I have to go places civilians can’t go. I could see things that no civilian could see. At one point, my camera was confiscated. Clean. I snapped a few photos and maybe captured something I shouldn’t have captured, and my camera was quickly returned to me with no photos. I have to go to China Lake and shoot in a top secret hangar. And it was all in this quest for authenticity. And I think you feel it when you see it, because it doesn’t feel like you’re in a Hollywood designed environment. There is a reality in this. We have collaborated with the real engineers who make the real secret aircraft. It was just a dream come true.
It’s quite funny that he didn’t even know enough to figure out what he had caught, but they sure as hell weren’t going to let him go! It’s great that I had the opportunity to visit these places and get inspiration from real life, but the military must draw the line in taking photos of classified things!
