Ever since ‘Stabs in the Back: The Mystery of the Glass Onion’ hit Netflix, viewers have been busy destroying every minute of Rian Johnson’s film, making it one of the most commented releases on social networks last year. In the sequel, Johnson plots an even more twisted mystery than the first chapter, filled with clues that challenge the audience in a gripping and entertaining puzzle. But there are clues that separate real detectives from amateurs, and Janelle Monáe was tasked with revealing one that was always in front of our noses. Warning, important plot details will be covered from here on out, so if you haven’t seen the movie, stop reading.

‘Daggers in the back: Glass Onion’: the detail hidden in plain sight that reveals the big twist in advance

‘Glass Onion’ is full of surprises and unexpected twists, the biggest of which comes towards the middle of the film, when we discover through a flashback that Monáe’s character is not Cassandra Brand, co-founder of Miles Bron’s (Edward Norton) company, but her twin sister, Helen, who joins the escape to Greece with Miles’ friends to find out who is behind his death. Johnson himself was reluctant to include the twist because it’s a common subject in mystery stories, but he manages to turn it around by introducing said twist in the middle and taking advantage of it to keep spinning the loop in the most ingenious way.

The turning point works thanks to its location, but also to the work of Monáe, who performs an exceptional double interpretative task. Speaking to Variety, the actress and singer peeled off a fresh layer of onion revealing that prominent detail that she warned us, in advance, that Cassandra was actually Helen, and it is none other than her wig. “Helen’s wig is something Rian and I discussed”Monáe reveals. “When she acts like Andi and no one knows it’s her, she parts her hair on the other side. The idea is that she’s a mirror image of her sister.”.

The head of the ‘Glass Onion’ hair department, Leslie Bennett, who was also present in the interview with Variety, adds “Rian wanted Andi and Helen to have two distinct looks. She is the typical corporate trendsetter”. For this Cassandra’s look is much more sophisticated. “She’s very focused and very smart”Monae says. “That’s why we wanted her hair to be as crafty as her”concludes.

Among the most watched in the history of Netflix

Netflix’s exorbitant investment in the “Knives Out” franchise (remember, it paid Rian Johnson $400 million for two sequels) is paying off. After its limited theatrical run last November, the film arrived on Netflix on December 23, preceded by excellent reviews. The hype has translated into public success and social impact, e “The Mystery of the Glass Onion” became the third most watched film on Netflix in its first 10 days and is already the fifth most watched film in the history of the platform. Benoit Blanc’s (Daniel Craig) third mystery is secured and Johnson is already writing the script. With what genius will he surpass himself again?
