Bella Ramsey, Ellie in “The Last of Us”, comes across as gender fluid

Bella Ramsey, the actress who plays Ellie in the TV adaptation of ‘The Last of Us’, came out as a gender fluid person. In an interview with The New York Times at the premiere of the HBO series, Ramsey describes how he feels about his gender and his experience with pronouns.

“I guess my gender has always been very fluid”reveals Ramsey to the New York Times. “If someone called me ‘she’, I wouldn’t think it, but I know if someone called me ‘he’, it was pretty exciting”. Which, yes, actually, in terms of choosing pronouns, Ramsey has no specific preference: “I am a person. Being gendered isn’t something I particularly enjoy, but when it comes to pronouns, I couldn’t care less.”.

The New York Times identifies Ramsey as non-binary, as she has no problem responding to one gender or another, noting that, “Yup [Bella] see that option in a form, that’s what it will score”. The 19-year-old British star, also famous for playing Lyanna Mormont in ‘Game of Thrones’, posted the interview on her Instagram account, thanking the post for “create a safe space”for which be sure to try “more thanks than I thought”.

Nomination in the gender neutral category

In the same interview, Ramsey expressed his delight at receiving a Critics Choice Awards nomination in the gender-neutral acting category for his work in ‘Catherine Called Birdy’, a film directed by Lena Dunham that premiered on Prime Video in October of last year. In it, Ramsey plays Birdy, a 14-year-old girl in medieval England who does her best to avoid the suitors introduced to her by her father (Andrew Scott) in his attempts to marry her off.

‘The Last of Us’ opens January 16th on HBO Max with an extended 85-minute first episode.
