Although Marvel and “Avatar: The Way of Water” have now restored the sci-fi genre to popularity at the worldwide box office, sci-fi has long suffered from being classified for a certain niche of people. This has meant that many of the great modern jewels have been forgotten, but it is always a good time to remember.

Letterboxd users voted for some of the underrated sci-fi gems which is worth seeing. And at the top of the list is ‘Colossal’, a film by Nacho Vigalondo, starring Anne Hathaway in 2016. The story follows Gloria, a woman who loses her job, her boyfriend and now returns to her hometown. But suddenly a gigantic monster appears and imitates all her movements. Event horizon

Although his career gradually faded after that, Paul WS Anderson left one of the best underrated sci-fi movies as well as “Event Horizon”. Released in 1997, the film stars Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne, who lead a group of astronauts sent to recover a spaceship that has been missing for seven years. Available on Amazon Prime Video.

Fountain

other of those sci-fi movies that have been forgotten is ‘The Fountain,’ directed by Darren Aronofsky, and starring Rachel Weisz with Hugh Jackman. This ambitious story features a man doomed to lose his wife in each of the different time phases he travels through. Available on Star+.

The immense of the night

Far from any great Hollywood actor or director, we have ‘The Vast of Night’, a gem of sci-fi and terror, released in 2019. The story is set in 1950s New Mexico where two young radio operators find a strange frequency that appears to come from extraterrestrial life, and that it has landed on the outskirts of the city. Available on Amazon Prime Video.

High life

Claire Denis has a great interest in science fiction, but not in the way Hollywood has taught us. And for example ‘High Life’, a horror and sci-fi film from A24 with Robert Pattinson and Mia Goth, in which we meet a group of criminals sentenced to life imprisonment, who are sent on a mission to a black hole for scientific purposes .

Finally, we have James Gray with the magnificent 2019 ‘Ad Astra’. A film starring Brad Pitt in which he plays astronaut Roy McBride, who has a mission to find his father, who has disappeared in space, and which leads him to explore the darkest of planets in the galaxy.
