Ask most hardcore movie fans for their top ten favorite movies of all time, and at least a handful of them will include The Shawshank Redemption. Based on a novella by Stephen Kingvery similar Stand by Me, this film tells a story of life, friendship and the persistence of the human spirit. Some might call it a perfect film, and many did, but some might tell you there’s only one thing stopping it from holding that title.

Over the years, a plot hole in the film has driven some viewers crazy and it has to do with the hole in the film. The escape hole that Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) dug into her prison wall to escape to freedom was covered in a poster of 1960s icon Raquel Welch. And after she executes her plan and is gone, the poster is perfectly put back in her place, so precisely attached that when the guardian puts his finger in the poster, it has enough tension to punch a very deliberate hole. . Some viewers wonder how this is possible.

The issue was reported on Watch Mojo (via CheatSheet), and some fans were quick to come to the film’s defense by debunking this alleged plot hole.

One commenter pointed out that Andy has more tools at his disposal than the average prisoner. “Andy in Shawshank has rock tools. He could have folded the bottom of the poster up and back. Then put the flat stone in the crease and glue it with almost everything. In fact, Dufresne was carrying a sack of rocks from his cell into the courtyard. It would not have been difficult or too careful for him to weigh the underside of the poster in his 19 years of digging.

Another fan authoritatively noted, “The poster in Shawshank redemption it’s not a mistake: scotch was invented in 1925, by 1930 its use was already common. The movie starts in 1947 and Andy was working in the library, it stands to reason that he had access to duct tape.” Everyone knows the old hat-loop tape trick, so this theory might run some water.

The commentator further continued, “…well established that the guards gave him special treatment, so it’s clear why they didn’t carry out good inspections of his cell.” True, the only reason Dufresne was allowed to see the poster was the director’s preferable treatment of him.

It doesn’t seem so far-fetched to me that he could have reattached it on the other side. Put half of it in before you crawl in, then the third and maybe a fourth with extra tape or rubber. Inmates have nothing but time and can be super crafty. I’m sure our friend, Andy Dufresne, didn’t neglect to reattach the poster.
