A trailer has been released for an upcoming witchcraft horror film titled Witchcraft, which will be screened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The film comes from the director Christopher Murray, and is described as a promising dark revenge thriller with a twist. It feels like a creepy, intense thriller and I like the dark tone.

In the film “On the remote island of Chiloé in the late 19th century, an indigenous girl named Rosa lives and works with her father on a farm. When the foreman brutally turns against Rosa’s father, she sets out for justice, asking for help from the king of a powerful organization of sorcerers.

Here’s a longer synopsis provided by Sundance:

“Chiloé Island, 1880. After her father is murdered by a German settler, Rosa (new Valentina Veliz Caileo), a 13-year-old Huilliche girl, renounces her Christian upbringing and seeks refuge with Mateo (Daniel Antiviolisten), the leader of an indigenous organization that practices witchcraft. Under Mateo’s gruff but tender tutelage, he learns the art of witchcraft and vows to settle the score. Rosa’s revenge leads to a brutal crackdown by the island’s Chilean Christian authorities and sets her on the path to discovering her dormant powers.

“Based on true events, Christopher Murray’s dark decolonial fantasy is an enigmatic coming-of-age tale, rooted in the historical conflict between the German settlers and the Huilliche people of Chile. Stunningly shot by cinematographer Maria Secco and co-written by Murray and Pablo Paredes, Witchcraft conjures an atmosphere of mournful magic, as it spins a cautiously hopeful account of indigenous resistance. As it follows young Rosa on her journey of self-discovery, the film traverses the borderlands between dark history and supernatural fairy tale. Antivilo gives a quietly powerful performance as the stoic sorcerer Mateo, and Véliz is influencing as his determined protégé.
