Director Gerard Johnstone’S M3GAN so far it has been quite successful at the box office and audiences love it! It’s just such a fun horror movie that has a perfect blend of horror, suspense and humor. It wasn’t an easy film to bring to life, though! In a recent interview with Johnstone, he said: “M3GAN had to be perfect. We couldn’t have a hair out of place. It was actually a terribly difficult shot. It was so hard. He added:

“I had a really great crew around me, all having fun and reminding each other, ‘Hey, this movie is fun.’ It was a real joy. It was incredible when the first cut came to be like, ‘Oh, this movie was so fascinating and fun.’”
Johnstone also discussed the film’s original ending being scrapped, hope for a sequel, and the murder of a child in the film. Why don’t we start with that, because it’s not often you see children murdered in horror movies. When asked if there was any pushback on this, he said:
“No one has ever backed down. That scene is like the wish fulfillment of any parent who just sees an asshole kid who you know will either turn out to be a monster and bully or push your child around. It was pure joy. Young Jack [Cassidy] he’s such a sweet boy, but he’s just a good bully. It’s actually a treasure, really. But when he starts, he reminded me of a young Ben Affleck. Because he’s in the woods, at which point he’s almost like a dark Grimms fairy tale. It’s like a lesson for kids who are thinking about being an asshole: just be careful.
It was also revealed that there was another ending planned for the film which would be a heavier CGI ending and it was eventually scrapped. Now, I liked the ending of the movie and thought it was well done, but the original ending took things a little higher. The director explained:
“They had this battle with Bruce, and there was going to be another part where they thought they escaped, and Bruce essentially…they leave the shop where they had this big fight, and then they hear a ‘ka- piece!’ and it’s Bruce’s head that gets thrown. And then, through the smoke of the door, M3GAN emerges just like a disembodied torso, and Bruce holds it from behind and walks down the aisle. It was amazing and I was really in love with it. But I didn’t we were able to do it for a variety of practical reasons. We tried to run that version and the physics just didn’t work. There were all these logistical things. That’s why we end up doing the version that we did. But I love the version that we did, although it was a cool idea I love the version we got because it made Cady’s character so much more interesting.
That ending would have been interesting to see! I can picture the picture in my head and I like it! But ultimately I’m happy with what ended up in the film and that it also left things open for a sequel. When asked if he was willing to make a sequel, Johnstone said:
“How can I not be? Now that the movie is done and people are embracing it. There are so many ideas we had and facets of M3GAN’s personality that we wanted to explore. I absolutely think there is more to say. And I know M3GAN would have more to say. I’d like to make another one. I hope soon, while still fresh in everyone’s mind.
It’s a safe bet that M3GAN will get a sequel. I guess we’ll see him in the theater in the next couple of years. The studio will ride the wave of success on this one.
