This is such an incredibly fun and action packed short film, which is a self audition test tape that was made to highlight the talents of Emily Ashby for the role of Teela in the announced Masters of the Universe movie. This is why the movie focuses on Teela and not He-Man, and she’s badass in the role! It’s a great audition tape!
In the story, “Teela (Emily Ashby), a heroic warrior of Eternia, protects the Sword of Power from three wanderers in an action-packed fight to reclaim its power.”
The short film was directed by Jonathan Martinwho shared the following statement explaining the purpose of the short by stating that it is a showcase short and not an attempt to expand Masters of the Universe canon. He also revealed that he was inspired and styled after Hong Kong action movies and Jackie Chan. Read the full statement below:
“The film was made primarily as an ambitious, if not audacious, audition for actress Emily Ashby for the role of Teela in the announced Masters of the Universe movies from Netflix. In deciding to do something that has rarely, if ever, been done on such a scale for an audition, we hoped that it would at least garner some buzz and attention for Emily with the role and possibly further consideration from the strong powers. .
To that end, the film isn’t a “fan film” in the traditional sense, as its original purpose and story was more of a showcase rather than an unofficial attempt to expand the MOTU canon. Of course, we absolutely hope that fans of MOTU and beyond enjoy it and take it for what it is: a fun time watching a character from MOTU kick ass and have fun with the legendary Power Sword. If we had approached it as a normal fan film, we would have included more characters, settings, etc. from the world of MOTUs than we had chosen, as well as making it a much longer film and faithful to the established canon. Instead, we created our own trio of original characters that she could fight against, as again we were creating a showcase for Emily as Teela and bringing in characters like He-Man or Skeletor would distract her from that purpose – and she would be a much more expensive!
Having grown up as an 80’s kid, I never imagined I’d be playing in the MOTU sandbox. It would be a pleasure and an incredible opportunity to dive properly into the world of MOTUs in the future, with a lot more money to boot, but if that’s all we’re capable of, then that’s fine. We hope you enjoy watching the film as much as we did taking this big swing out in the middle of nowhere, with limited resources, a small but talented crew, and a lot of enthusiasm.
The film was inspired and inspired by Hong Kong action films and Jackie Chan. Our original music was composed by the composer for DC’s Stargirl and Netflix SlumberlandGerrit Wunder, while our sound design was handled by 10-time Emmy nominated sound editor Patrick Hogan Cobra Kai And The Umbrella Academy. Hong Kong stuntman Christian “Kang” Bachini coordinated the stunts.
