In the night between Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 January, the career of Ke Huy Quan, whom Steven Spielberg discovered in 1984, changed forever. That evening, during the Golden Globes gala, Quan won the award for best supporting actor for his work in ‘All at once everywhere’ and dedicated it, in part, to the director: “I’ve been raised to never forget where I’m from and always remember who gave me my first chance. I’m so happy to see Steven Spielberg here tonight. Steven, thank you.”he said in his speech, “When I started my career as a child actor in ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’, I felt very lucky that they cast me. As I got older, I started to wonder if that was the case, if it was just luck.” In the audience Spielberg blew him a kiss and both met again off-air 38 years after that shoot.

“Sometimes the best things happen during commercials”.
Spielberg was also in the room as a candidate and a winner, because thanks to his new film, ‘The Fabelmans’, he won the awards for best director and best film.
never say die
Another film Spielberg and Quan made together was “The Goonies,” although King Midas of Hollywood only executive produced it (and the original story for which Chris Columbus wrote the screenplay is his). This 80s classic also starred Jeff Cohen as Gordi, who quit acting soon after and went on to law school. Cohen works as an entertainment lawyer and curiously, thanks to him, Quan now has a Golden Globe: “When the producer of our film (“All at Once Everywhere”) was negotiating my contract He said he never imagined having to talk to Gordi and Data”, Quan recounted a panel discussion hosted by The Hollywood Reporter that was also attended by Adam Sandler, Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Adam Sandler and Jeremy Pope. When Sandler asked him if he had at least gotten him a good deal, Quan didn’t hesitate to support his friend and fellow adventurer: “Jeff is an outstanding lawyer.”
And luckily he had their help, because such an opportunity seems like one in a million: “I was so hungry for a script like this, for a role like this. I remember reading it until 5 in the morning and having all these ideas in my head of what I wanted to do with this role,” shared the actor, “I looked out the window, the sun was rising and I said to myself: «I have to go to sleep», because my casting was in the afternoon. It had been over 25 years since the last audition, I was so nervous I was shaking.” It is true that since 1992’s ‘The Man from California’, we have hardly seen Quan on screen, and in 30 years he has only participated in a couple of Asian titles: ‘Mou han fou wut’ and ‘1997 Fei hu qi bing’. In 2021 he returns to television with the Netflix series ‘Ohana: The Hawaiian Treasure’ and we will soon see him in the second season of ‘Loki’ and in an episode of ‘American Born Chinese’.

deserves a spin-off
Of course, after a spectacular award campaign that could end at the next Oscars, Quan has been giving interviews for months and talking about his plans for the future, among which, if it were up to him, there would be Indiana Jones: “I love the character of Tapón”said the actor on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, “It’s fun and it’s brave, and it saves Indy’s ass. If Disney or Lucasfilm ever comes up to me and says, “We want to do a Tapón spin-off,” I’m in! I love that character so much and it would be great to visit him so many years later.” And what could the story be about? Quan wouldn’t be surprised if Plug became an archaeologist like his hero.
