


Ryan Murphy had a message for LGBTQ people everywhere as he embraced the Carol Burnett Award for Excellence in Television during the Golden Globes 2023 on January 10th. “It’s hard being an LGBTQ kid in America,” she reminded the audience as she criticized places like Florida, where the “Don’t Say Gay” bill and other anti-LGBTQ laws call home.
After an impassioned presentation by billy porter, Ryan took the stage. Addressing his collaborators, Ryan told the audience: “It is often said that you will have to hide your light to survive. But for the kids to watch, tonight I’m offering MJ and Billy and Niecy and Matt and Jeremy as examples of possibilities. My mission was to take the unseen, the unloved, and make them into the heroes I want to see but have never seen in pop culture.”
Ryan has made a huge impact at the Golden Globes over the years. She won the Best Drama Award in 2005 for pinch/squeeze, Outstanding Comedy/Music Series Won for Happiness in 2010 and 2011, and won in the category limited series, anthology 2017 The people v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story and 2019 The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. In total, she earned 16 Golden Globe nominations.
