In the The Last of Us video game franchise, people in the story become infected with the cordyceps fungus by inhaling airborne spores. Well, the creators of the series have now revealed that that has been changed in the upcoming series. The infection will not spread equally, but will spread through tendrils.

Craig Mazin And Neil Druckman explained why they made this change during an interview with Collider. Druckmann has stated that one of the creative decisions they made early in development was not to want to use gas masks in the series. This has obviously led to conversations about how to reinvent the mushroom to better fit the live-action series. Druckman said:

“Eventually, those conversations [about not using gas masks] it led us to these tendrils, and then, just thinking about how there’s a transition that happens from one infected to another, and how the fungus does, it could become an interconnected network. It became very scary to think that they are all working against us in this unified way, which was a concept that I really liked, that was developed on the show.

Druckmann didn’t explain everything about the tendrils or exactly how they work, but it was done to bring into focus how the infected are all connected. Also, he allows the actor to show their faces. Mazin also explained that all the changes made to the adaptation were to keep the focus on the two main characters Joel and Ellie:

“I will say that there is one character in the game who has a very interesting point of view on the fungus and his observation of the Cordyceps that ties into some of the larger themes of what the show is about and oddly that ties into the idea of ​​the beauty and potential danger of love, and so, part of what Neil and I wanted to do was just make sure that everything in our story that we’ve built here, as it’s been inspired and adapted from the work he’s done on the game, it ultimately comes down to the thing that matters most to us, and that is the relationship between Joel and Ellie.

Regardless of the changes that have been made, Druckmann has previously said that he believes this is the best and most authentic adaptation of a video game ever made. I hope he’s right!
