‘Inconceiving’ Kaitlyn Dever auditioned for Ellie in ‘The Last of Us’

The title of “The Last of Us” is one of the most anticipated adaptations, not only of the year, but also by many players who have had the opportunity to experience the history of Naughty Dog with their own hands. But long before Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey landed the lead role, Kaitlyn Dever from Netflix’s hit series ‘Inconceiving’ auditioned for the role of Ellie.

This was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter where they mentioned it Kaitlyn Dever auditioned for the role of Ellie in ‘The Last of Us’, but not in the adaptation that’s coming out on HBO, but in the film that director Sam Raimi was preparing. The director behind the first ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy wanted to bring the story of the video game to the big screen, but to no avail.

In addition to Dever, THR also revealed it by Maisie Williams ‘game of Thrones’ audition for the role, however, his situation was the same. Raimi had some differences with Sony, a production company that canceled the fourth installment of Spider-Man starring Tobey Maguire, and who wanted a story in the style of “World War Z”, while the director wanted “Children of Men”.

It’s unknown if Dever or Williams auditioned again for the role of Ellie, but it was recently revealed that more than 100 actresses auditioned for ‘The Last of Us’, however, it was Bella Ramsey who convinced Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, creators of the series, and who immediately noticed the chemistry with Pedro Pascal as Joel.

What happened to the movie “The Last of Us”?

A lot had to happen for Sony and Naughty Dog to finally find HBO and the right format to tell the story of Joel and Ellie. Sam Raimi wanted to make an adaptation of the first video game “The Last of Us” just a few years after its release, however, his vision did not at all match what the producer was looking for.

Sony and Sam could never find a middle ground in their visions, and ultimately the film adaptation of ‘The Last of Us’ was never completed and was shelved. Time passed, until Sony decided that television would be the best way to tell the story of Joel and Ellie, and use the format to expand the universe, while also adding things that Druckmann could not fit into the video game.

Additionally, a series would allow for multiple seasons, though the creators made it clear that the story of the adaptation would end at the same point the video games left off. ‘The Last of Us’ will premiere on January 15 through the HBO Max service.
