had avatar 2 If he wasn’t a money maker, the question arose as to whether Cameron would realize his vision of three more sequels despite the fact that he was working on them.
Cameron’s comments relate to the latest episode of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace.
The 3x Oscar-winning filmmaker also clarified his statements GC Magazine: He told you in November that the sequel should be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history just to break even. These pictures have earned more than $2 billion worldwide.
Cameron told Wallace: “I never really counted it. I said it had to be one of the highest grossing films in history and someone else gave that number and it was accepted. The number is actually lower.”
Avatar: the way of water is $1.54 billion worldwide, just surpassed Top Gun: Maverick as the highest grossing film of 2022. It is also the ninth highest grossing film of all time and the second highest grossing film of the pandemic after Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.9 billion)
“It looks like with the momentum the film has right now, we’re going to be able to easily get through our hiatus for the next few days, so it looks like I don’t have to come out here and do these other sequels. Cameron told Wallace, “I know what I’m going to do for the next six or seven years.”
Cameron also said about breaking even with the sequel: “The thing is, it’s going to be okay. I’m sure we’ll soon have a conversation with Disney’s top executives about the future game plan Avatar 3, which is already in the can — we’ve already captured and shot the entire film, so we’re in extensive post-production to pull off all that CG magic. And then Avatar 4 and 5 are both written. We even have a few 4 in the can. We started a franchise at this point. We have started a story that can now span several films.”
Avatar 3 is currently scheduled for release on December 20, 2024, Avatar 4 on December 18, 2026 and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028.
