EXCLUSIVE: Jason Clarke (win time, Oppenheimer) stars alongside Kiefer Sutherland The court martial of Caine’s mutiny by Paramount Global and Showtime.
He plays the character of Lieutenant Barney Greenwald, a lawyer who reluctantly represents Stephen Maryk (Jake Lacy). Greenwald believes Maryk is guilty of the charges he is now bringing. Although Greenwald’s ruthless honesty and lack of enthusiasm frustrates his client, he does his best to see through the nonsense to discover what he believes to be the truth about the mutiny aboard the Caine.
Directed by director William Friedkin, The court martial of Caine’s mutinyoriginally written by Herman Wouk in 1951, will be retold for modern times and will put the United States Navy on trial for mutiny. To date, no mutiny has ever been recorded within the United States Navy.
As the USS Caine was engulfed by a deadly typhoon off the coast of Iran, Maryk invoked Article 184 of Naval Regulations to relieve his superior, Lieutenant Commander Phillip Francis Queeg (Sutherland), of his duties. Maryk, who was self-righteous and insisted that his extreme actions were justified, argued that Queeg was mentally unstable and his paranoid delusions endangered the ship and crew.
As a result, Maryk took control and sent The Caine straight into the storm. Fortunately, the ship and her entire crew survived, deeply convincing Maryk that his actions were justified. Through a series of witness interviews and a deep dive into the inner psyche of a career naval commander, Greenwald is able to poke holes in the mutiny charges against his client. When the defense calms down, Queeg is a broken man. But despite Maryk being exonerated, Greenwald ends up blaming him for a serious breach in Navy protocol.
At the end of the climax, Greenwald confronts Maryk as the culprit, finally illustrating the age-old struggle between truth and power, youth and establishment, and right and wrong.
Clarke will next appear in Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer; and he continues his role as Jerry West on HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. Other credits include Zero Dark Thirty, Everest, Sunrise from the planet of the apes, mud boundand Chappaquiddick.
He is represented by Robert Stein Management, BLA; and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, et al.
