As you know, HBO has canceled its sci-fi series Western world and removed the entire series from HBO Max. This was such a weird move, but we’ve seen Warner Bros. make all kinds of crazy decisions since Discovery took over.

Star of the series James Marden recently addressed the show’s cancellation after season four, calling the decision “a disappointment,” as a fifth season would wrap up the story. Marsden shared with Rolling Stone:

“I’d be lying to you if I told you that the way we ended Westworld wasn’t a disappointment. I’ll never speak ungratefully about any of my experiences, but it would have been nice to be able to complete the story we wanted to finish.

“I love this Westworld family. It was one of those unique opportunities to be a part of something where I too would be sitting at home eagerly waiting for the next episode as a fan. I completely understand that it is an expensive show and that great shows have to have large audience to deserve the expense, I just wish it was more than financial success. But who knows, maybe there’s a world where it can be completed somehow. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, because I know we had plans to finish it the way we wanted.”

Who knows, maybe years from now they’ll be able to wrap up the story in film form. It wouldn’t be the first time this has happened.

Co-creator of the series Jonathan Nolan he hoped HBO would give the series a fifth season to wrap up the show’s ambitious story, previously saying, “We’ve always planned for a fifth and final season. We are still in conversation with the net. We sincerely hope to make them happen”. Co-creator Lisa Joy he continued that the story has always worked towards a specific ending: “Jonah and I have always had an ending in mind that we hope to achieve. We haven’t quite reached that yet.” Talking about what season five would explore, Joy said:

“From the very beginning, in Season 1, we talked about characters being in loops, and how do you break those loops? The cycles of violence, the cycles of destruction, the cycles of rebuilding. So you hope that with each epicycle, the progress it’s been done – that you’re moving towards something good,” he said. “Hale is in control this season. What role does she play? Ford was in control – humans were in control – in season 1. What does she look like? Now we’re moving towards, God willing, a season where Dolores is in control. and the cycle will repeat itself one last time. How will it be different? What new things can be learned? And is it possible to break out of that cycle?”

It’s a shame that the Westworld team didn’t get a chance to wrap up their story, but what can you do!? These things happen.
