I’ve teased a few times in previous information articles I’ve heard of Dwayne Johnson trying to take the lead at DC Studios first James Gunn and Peter Safran they were hired. Well, now Variety is offering some details on what was going on behind the scenes, and as it turns out, Johnson made some enemies at the studio.
According to the report, Johnson presented a proposal to the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav straight into April 2022. At that meeting, Johnson presented “a multi-year plan for Black Adam and a Cavill-led Superman where the two properties would intertwine, setting up a showdown between Superman and Black Adam.”
Johnson’s ambitions may have ruffled a few feathers and earned him some enemies in the studio, as one source notes: “Dwayne has gotten around everyone, which hasn’t meshed well.” He had a whole new vision and direction for DC movies, but the studio wasn’t buying him. That vision is 100% dead now, though.
Johnson’s relationship with the studio then continued to sour when ‘Johnson pushed for a production credit on the DC animated film League of Super-Pets. But the studio believed he “did little to promote it.” Furthermore, Johnson reportedly insisted that the Black Adam The New York premiere features its brand of tequila, Teremana, which was derided due to the film’s PG-13 rating.
Another insider went on to note that Johnson’s “demands have increased and the returns just weren’t there.” It seems Johnson has started to get a little ambitious and maybe even power hungry. But, Black Adam ended up being a disappointing film that didn’t live up to the hype.
Regardless of all of this, Johnson’s future looks good. He will always find movies that suit his style. It just won’t be at DC Studios anytime soon.
