When he previously spoke about the film, he offered a little more insight into the film, saying he is following the “101 Dalmatians rules, but there are swearing and these R-rated things.” open-minded to adult animation, the film is about to be made.

“If you think back to 2010/2011, adult animation is in a completely different place than it is now. It’s quite different. For us to make an R-rated film then was way beyond its day. It didn’t feel like there was any movement on it.”

Tartakosvky is developing the film with Sony Pictures Animation and Renegade Animation, a Glendale, California-based studio co-founded by Darrell Van Critters, a veteran of Warner Bros. Animation and Disney Animation. The director continued:

“We’re making an R-rated 2D animated film. This is the golden ring we’ve been searching for since we were in our 20s. We would never think. And what’s more, it’s well animated.

When describing the animation, Tartakovsky said he was heavily inspired by the Disney classic Lady and the Tramp, and says that “There are similar sensations in there.” She went on to describe the film and its tone, saying it won’t include pop culture humor:

“It’s vulgar but it has character and it’s cartoonish. And he has heart. Humor is not pop culture humor. This is the most important thing. There are no Kardashian jokes. There is none of that. It’s all character humor. This is what makes it so much more unique and stands out. It looks like nothing else.

I actually love that there won’t be any pop culture jokes, as that will not only set it apart from animated comedies being made these days, but live-action comedies as well. This movie is doing something new and different with humor and I’m excited about it.

Tartakovsky went on to say, “I am beyond thrilled. There are 12 years of work.” There is no release date yet, but I can’t wait!
