football icon Leather he died at the age of 82. News of the Brazilian football legend’s death made headlines on December 29, 2022. The athlete, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, died in a São Paulo hospital after serious health problems, his manager Joe Fraga confirmed to the New York Times. His doctors previously shared that he was battling cancer and “kidney and heart dysfunction.”
Pele brought the World Cup to his native Brazil three times. During his career he scored 1,283 goals in 1,367 professional matches. He retired from Brazilian soccer in 1974 and retired permanently in 1977 after three seasons playing in New York.
