Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal people, Where the crayfish sing) has signed on to play iconic singer and songwriter Carole King in the film adaptation of Very beautifull, based on the Broadway musical of the same name. Oscar nominee Lisa Cholodenko (The children are fine) is directing.
Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg, who co-wrote “Kids Are All Right” together, recently wrote their own version of the adapted screenplay, which is currently in development. Playtone’s Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman will produce the film with Paul Blake, who also produced the stage play. Sherry Kondor, Christine Russell, Steven Shareshian and Mike Bosner will serve as executive producers.
Sony obtained the rights to use King’s songs, as well as the living rights from King and other artists featured in the show, more than seven years ago. The play “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” ran on Broadway for five years and won a Tony Award for Jessie Mueller’s lead performance.
Carole King herself said of Edgar-Jones in the role:
“Daisy has a spirit and energy that I recognized as myself when I was younger. She is amazingly talented and I know she will give a great performance.”
The musical features many of King’s greatest hits, such as “One Fine Day”, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”, “I Feel the Earth Move” and “You’ve Got a Friend”. King’s prolific songwriting career has not only resulted in hits for herself, but she has also provided chart-topping material for the likes of Aretha Franklin, Little Eva and Mariah Carey. She has produced 25 solo albums, including the Grammy-winning “Tapestry,” which holds the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist.
I’m a huge fan of Carole King and I think Daisy Edgar-Jones is a fantastic actress. I can’t wait to see this adaptation and hear all the great music included.
