Director Gio DanteThe 1993 movie Matinee it’s a great movie and it’s also a ridiculously underrated movie! There are so many people who have never even seen this movie, and it’s a shame because it’s such a fun and entertaining movie! This is a movie that I find myself recommending to people all the time. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a must see!
Today I have a video essay for you to watch from editor Andrew Saladino, who creates film video essays for his YouTube channel The Royal Ocean Film Society. This video is titled “Matinee: The Most Overlooked Movie About Movies” and it breaks down the movie and offers some interesting insights into the movie and what makes it so good.
The film is set in October 1962, “the Cuban Missile Crisis occurs and the threat of nuclear war looms over the American South. Low-budget director Lawrence Woolsey (John Goodmann) is in Key West, Florida for the debut of his new film ‘Mant!’ and thinks the prevailing mood of dread surrounding the premiere is perfect for stirring up some excitement. A group of local teenagers prepare for the opening night of the film, also going through small crises.
Enjoy the essay and there’s a good chance it will inspire you to revisit the film if you haven’t seen it in a while.
