The release of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ was a worldwide success, however, it is still far from achieving its goal of becoming a profitable film for Disney. Even so, James Cameron has already hit the mark with the third installment of the franchise, and he is once again insisting that he has a 9-hour version for ‘Avatar 3’, and that’s no joke.
For some time now, the director of “Titanic” has toyed with the idea of having a feature film premiere on streaming platforms and another with shorter clips for traditional cinemas. Now, James Cameron insists it ‘avatars 3’ it will last 3 hoursas Jeff Sneider of CBR said, during the Hot Mic podcast, a few days ago.
According to James Cameron’s intentions, it has to stop a version of ‘avatars 3’ 9 hours where the full version is available, i.e. with special effects work, from there, make the required cuts. Of course, this is a challenge not only for the director, but for Disney as well, to pay for an entire production, so that ultimately much of the finished footage goes unreleased.
This doesn’t sound so far-fetched, given that already in 2021, in an interview with Denis Villeneuve for Variety, James Cameron has talked about releasing a movie ‘Avatars’ very long streamand a minor cut in theaters. And although neither Disney nor 20th Century Studios have confirmed that this will happen, in the director’s mind this idea does not seem so impossible.

James Cameron wants to avoid the “Stranger Things effect” in Avatar
With several sequels in production right now, James Cameron will have to contend with the growth of his younger cast, which he calls “The Stranger Things Effect”: “Where should you [que los protagonistas] They are still in high school, but they look like they are 27 years old”. And although the director likes the Netflix series, but he wants to get rid of disbelief.
Furthermore, ‘Avatar 3’ was planned as the closure of the entire franchise, so, if ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ turns out to be a flop, or ends up not meeting the expectations of the production company, Cameron can close once for all with the saga, and put aside everything he had planned for the next 4 films he would be working on over the next few years.
At the moment, ‘Avatar 3’ does not have a release date, but everything indicates that the following year will be the time for Cameron to start recording and hopefully we will see him at some point in 2024. Although of course everything will depend on the next few weeks of ‘The Way of Water’ in the global billboard.
