Ellen Pompeo will star as an emergency room nurse in Not a Sound, a new mystery thriller series developed for streaming platform Hulu by veteran television producer David E. Kelley.
The long-time Grey's Anatomy star will trade her doctor's coat for nurse's scrubs to portray Amelia Winn, a health worker whose life is upended after a traffic accident causes her to lose her hearing.
Murder mystery and medical drama
Based on the novel of the same name by author Heather Gudenkauf, Not a Sound combines medical drama with suspense and crime fiction. The story centers on Amelia as she navigates her new reality with the help of an assistance dog who acts as her ears.
Her life takes another dramatic turn when Amelia and her service dog discover the body of a former female coworker. The discovery draws the nurse directly into a criminal investigation that may share connections with the accident that caused her hearing loss.
Creative team and production partners
Screenwriters Matthew Tinker and Annakate Chappell are adapting the book for television. The writing duo previously worked together as screenwriters on Big Sky, another broadcast drama created under Kelley's production banner.
Filmmaker Azazel Jacobs, who directed the feature film His Three Daughters, has been selected to direct the project. Executive producers for the series include Kelley, Tinker, Chappell, Jacobs, Laura Holstein, and Pompeo.
The series is produced by 20th Television, the Disney-owned studio behind numerous primetime television productions. The project forms part of an overall production deal between Pompeo and 20th Television.
Grey's Anatomy legacy and release details
Alongside Hugh Laurie in House and George Clooney in ER, Pompeo is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in medical television drama. She portrayed Dr. Meredith Grey for 22 seasons on ABC's flagship series Grey's Anatomy and will remain involved with the show as production begins on its 23rd season, although she has not served as its primary lead for some time.
Kelley has established a reputation as one of American television's most prolific creators, having launched hit legal dramas including Boston Legal and the HBO series Big Little Lies.
Not a Sound remains in development for Hulu in the United States. International audiences will be able to watch the series on Disney+, which distributes Hulu original content globally. Hulu and 20th Television have not yet announced an official premiere date for the project.
