A Delta Air Lines passenger flight carrying 147 people was forced to make an emergency diversion to Detroit on August 25 after the pilot fell ill during a flight across the United States. The incident occurred aboard a Boeing 757 traveling from Los Angeles to Boston, according to a report by CBS News.

The captain of the aircraft notified air traffic controllers mid-flight that he was experiencing a medical issue and required urgent hospitalization. Following the captain's communication with ground control, the flight crew immediately altered course over the US mainland to land at the nearest suitable airport in Detroit.

Emergency medical teams met the airliner upon landing in Detroit, where the pilot was immediately transferred off the aircraft and taken to a local hospital. Delta Air Lines subsequently brought a new crew onto the plane to allow the delayed passengers to resume their journey to Boston.

Airline apology and medical status

Delta Air Lines released an official statement following the incident to express its apologies to the 147 passengers affected by the unexpected flight disruption. CBS News noted that the airline did not provide information regarding the pilot's specific medical condition or his status after being admitted to the hospital.

Delta Air Lines, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, is one of the major legacy air carriers in the United States, operating major hubs across the country including at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The Boeing 757 is a medium-range, narrow-body twin-engine jet airliner produced by Boeing, frequently used by commercial airlines for long-distance domestic flights connecting the West and East coasts.

Previous medical incidents in US aviation

The incident marks another health emergency involving flight crews in US airspace in recent times. Previously, a pilot flying for Endeavor Air, a US regional airline, briefly lost consciousness during a landing approach in the United States, forcing crew members to declare an official emergency on board before landing safely.
