Mo Amer drew inspiration from his own life for his Netflix comedy series Motherco-created by Ramy Youssef, which follows a Palestinian refugee seeking asylum and US citizenship in Houston. The series debuted on the streamer in August and quickly gained recognition as one of the first American television series with a Palestinian-American protagonist. It also received a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Series Under 40 Minutes.

The first episode, titled “Hamoodi,” is the latest installment of It Starts on the Page, Deadline’s annual series highlighting the scripts that serve as the creative backbone of the live shows that will define TV awards season. Our series’ scripts are all submitted for this year’s Emmy Awards and were selected by Deadline based on criteria such as critical acclaim, selection from a variety of networks and platforms, and a mix of established and lesser-known shows.

Mo with Amer follows Mo Najjar, a fictional Palestinian refugee who flees Kuwait with his mother Yusra (Farah Bsieso) and brother Sameer (Omar Elba) after the start of the Gulf War. The family eventually ends up in Texas, where they begin the years-long struggle for asylum. In each episode, the series attempts to shed light on many of the difficulties that immigrants in the United States face on their journey to citizenship.

In “Hamoodi”, written by Amer and Youssef and directed by Solvan “Slick” Naim, Mo loses his job at a mobile shop because he does not have a work permit. The episode follows him as he searches for a new job and prepares for the rest of the season as he and his family await their asylum application.
