Broadway’s oft-cited efforts to transcend traditional audiences and its own urban environment are evident in the choice of venue for the 2023 Tony Awards: Instead of the usual Theater District and Times Square, venues like Radio City Music Hall or one of the great Broadway venues, the Tonys are broadcast live on CBS from the United Palace in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Upper Manhattan.
The 76th Annual Tony Awards will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2023 on CBS and will be broadcast live and on demand on Paramount+.
The announcement was made today by the American Theater Wing and the Broadway League, hosts of the awards. More information, including hosting plans, will be announced in the coming months.
“We are thrilled to bring the Tony Awards to the historic United Palace for the first time,” said Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the American Theater Wing, and Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, said in a joint statement. “As we celebrate the best of this Broadway season and 76 years of Tony Awards, we look forward to ushering in a new golden era for the performance of this majestic Golden Age Theater.”
The United Palace opened in 1930 as one of five Loew “Wonder Theaters” – variety shows and movie theaters in four boroughs and New Jersey. Seating nearly 3,400, the United Palace is Manhattan’s fourth largest theater, hosting concerts, movie premieres, film screenings and other events. The United Palace serves the Washington Heights community by exhibiting the performing and visual arts of local artists—many of them schoolchildren—and is home to the nonprofit Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance.
An extravagant and beautiful venue in the tradition of classic 1930s movie and theater houses, The Palace is located on Broadway but at the intersection of 175th Street approximately 133 blocks or just under 7 miles north of Times Square.
Also announced today is the Tony Awards submission deadline for the 2022-2023 season: Thursday, April 27, 2023 for all Broadway productions that meet the eligibility requirements. The 2023 Tony Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
The 76th celebration will recognize and honor Broadway productions from the 2022-2023 season. The Tony Awards are presented by the Broadway League and the American Theater Wing.
