Golden Globe nominations more diverse than 2022, but films with black themes are overlooked

In the wake of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s diversity controversy and its push to increase representation, this year’s list of multiple TV and film nominees in acting, songwriting, film score, directing and writing even surpasses last year’s: 30 to 26.

Numbers don’t always tell the whole story, however, as the city yearns to see the industry make strides to recognize creatives whose projects are often ignored or overlooked by awards’ voting boards.

This year, the HFPA failed to nominate Black films with strong themes in the Best Picture category, despite a strong cast that included Disney/Marvel. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (to be surpassed soon Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness with more than USD 411 million), that of TriStar Queen (one of the fall’s top-grossing adult pictures at $67.1 million), Apple Original Films’ Liberation, of Orion To and Letitia Wright Cannes titles from Focus Features, The silent twin.

Black Globe 2023 numbers were down to 13 of 2022’s 16 numbers. This shortfall came among film nominees who saw 9 of films like last year King Richard, West Side Story, Respect and Happenand 6 this year, including Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama, Viola Davis Mrs KinG; Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Angela Bassett and original songwriters Rihanna, Ryan Coogler and Temilade Openiyi for Lift Me Up Wakanda Forever; and Jeremy Pope in the Drama Film for Best Actor for A24s The inspection.

While Disney aggressively championed Bassett as Queen Ramonda wakanda forever, Coogler falls far behind in the category for directors and actresses to Wright, former Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira. The first Black Panther received three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture, Original Score and Song “All the Stars”. The film won three Oscars, including best costume, production design and original score.

In addition to skipping Queen For Best Motion Picture Drama Feature, HFPA voters snubbed the film in the Directing category for Gina Prince-Bythewood and actresses Thuso Mbedu and Lashana Lynch. The film is an anomaly outside Wakanda forever because it is an original action epic for black women. TriStar executives had no rewards other than Mel Gibson’s when the title was given the green light good heart. Even with race and ethnicity rising past 51%, how could the HFPA largely ignore this critically acclaimed film with a 94% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes?

Orion promotes the star of Until, Danielle Deadwyler, who won Best Lead Actress in Gotham and Best Actress at last week’s Critics Choice Celebration of Black Cinema & Television; as well as the director of this picture, Chinonye Chukwu.

This year’s Black Globe TV nominees were seven, including Zendaya (TV Actress Drama, euphoria); Donald Glover (TV actor, comedy or musical, Atlanta), Niecy Nash (limited series supporting cast, dahmer) and some of Abbot Primary School including Quinta Brunson (TV Musical or Comedy Actress), Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph (both TV Supporting Actresses), and Tyler James Williams (TV Supporting Actor). ABC Abbot Primary School has been nominated in comedy or musical TV series as well as FX’s various culinary series the bear, The final season of however Atlanta was not

The Asian community saw the biggest increase at the Globes between 2022 and 2023, out of two nominees (Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-Jae and O Yeong-Su) to 9 with Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Dan Kwan (director and screenwriter) for Everything, everywhere, all at once; Dolly De Leon for Best Supporting Actress triangle of sorrow, and RRR “Naatu Naatus” songwriters MM Keeravani, Chandrabose and singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava.
