Gamechanger Films was launched in 2013 as the first equity fund dedicated to financing films directed by women to address gender inequality in the film industry. In January 2020, veteran producer Effie Brown was named CEO of Gamechanger Films.
A longtime advocate and voice for diversity and inclusion in the film industry, Brown produces, develops and funds content by and about women, POC, LGBTQ+ and people with disabilities.
Before joining Gamechanger, Brown produced Real women have curves, dear whites and HBO’s Project Green Light and executive producer of the Fox series by Lee Daniels star and the Disney Channel zombies.
Gamechanger Films recently co-financed Netflix Happendirected by Rebecca Hall and starring Oscar nominee Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson. Effie is currently show running A fashion story, a four-part Vice documentary for Disney+ hosted by Gwen Stefani that examines how Disney media has influenced pop culture. Other projects are: Stranger with a camerathe film debut of Oscar winner Oorlagh George and Amazons Run baby, run. Also in the pipeline pale horseGabby Sidibe’s directorial debut; magic, starring and co-produced by Taraji P. Henson and Gabrielle Union; and a noticea horror film rooted in Gullah Geeche mysticism.
But today we are going to talk about her latest venture The inspection, the A24 film written and directed by Elegance Bratton, starring Jeremy Pope, Union, Raúl Castillo and Bokeem Woodbine. Inspired by Bratton’s own story, it follows a young gay black man, disowned by his mother and left with few options for his future, who decides to join the Marines and does whatever it takes to thrive in a system that left him behind. But even as he struggles with deep-seated prejudices and the grueling routines of basic training, he finds unexpected camaraderie, strength, and support in this new community, giving him a hard-earned sense of belonging that will shape his identity and change his life forever.
