Controversial comedians Dave Chappelle and Louis CK, who were mistakenly thought to be canceled, are among this year’s Grammy nominees for best comedy album.
They tackle Grammy stars Jim Gaffigan and Patton Oswalt and newcomer Randy Rainbow.
Chappelle who was the host Saturday night live who received significant backlash for his opening monologue about anti-Semitism last weekend, has been nominated for the comedy album version of his Netflix special The closerwith the jokes about the transgender community prompting GLAAD to declare, “Chapelle’s brand has become synonymous with ridiculing transgender people.”
Chappelle has previously been nominated for three Comedy Album Grammys, winning each: 2018 Dave Chappelle: The Age of Spin; 2019 Dave Chappelle: Equanimity & The Bird Revelation; and
2020 Dave Chappelle: Sticks and stones. He shared 2022 Best Spoken Word Album with Amir Sulaiman 8:46 a.m.
CK’s We are sorrythe album, with its August 2021 taped performances at New York’s Madison Square Garden, also sparked some backlash in what some felt was the title’s tongue-in-cheek response to sexual misconduct allegations against the comedian in 2017. ( CK won the Grammy in the Comedy Album category last year Sincerely, Louis KK).
In addition to Sincerely, Louis KKThe comic previously won Grammys in this category for Hilarious (2012); and Live in Madison Square Garden (2016). In 2015 he was nominated Oh dear God.
Gaffigan’s nomination for his comedy monster Album marks Comic’s seventh Grammy nomination (most recently in 2021 The dull tourist), which ties him up with Oswalt, nominated for we all scream (he was also nominated for 2021 I love everything; Oswalt won the 2017 Grammy for his Talk to clap).
New to the category is Rainbow, whose first studio album has been nominated A little brain, a little talent was released last year after his Pink Glasses Tour and features versions of some of his political satire parodies on YouTube, original songs and a version of “The Jitterbug”, the famous deleted song by The Wizard of Oz. The album also features guest stars Tituss Burgess, Josh Gad, Sean Hayes, Patti LuPone and Bernadette Peters.
