The latest installment of Deadline’s Sound & Screen officially kicks off Thursday night in Los Angeles, with genre-bending and moving original music from some of the film industry’s most respected talent to rock awards season.
The program will be held at UCLA’s Royce Hall and will feature composers from the films Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Ludwig Goransson), Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro (Alexander Desplat)no (Michael Abels)Thirteen lives (Benjamin Wallfisch)), E.O (Pawel Mykietyn) and life (Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch) who will discuss their work and perform their scores live with a 60-piece orchestra. It also features songwriters including 13-time Oscar nominee Diane Warren and Fleet Foxes lead songwriter and singer Robin Pecknold.
Check out the full lineup and program below.
What impresses about this year’s Sound and Screen selection is its depth and range. Polish composer Mykietyn is here with the score for Jerzy Skolimowski’s Cannes Jury Prize winner E.O. This film was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the Toronto Film Festival, which the moonlight Helmer’s first project in seven years.
Meanwhile, Abels, a three-time collaborator with hit director Jordan Peele, will revise the score for the Universal Pictures title nostarring Daniel Kaluuya, as Desplat takes us on a journey through the scoring of del Toro’s longtime passion project Pinocchio. The film’s song “Ciao Papa” was submitted by Netflix for consideration in the Best Original Song category at this year’s Oscars, which Desplat told Deadline as it helps portray “the most emotional moment in the film.”
Warren, who has worked with the likes of Elton John, Celine Dion and Tina Turner, is here with the original song “Applause,” which she wrote for the female-driven project Tell it like a woman. Pecknold will perform his new original song for Amazon’s documentary wild cat.
