“I’ve been dancing since I was 7 or 8, and then I started dancing at 15 or 16,” says choreographer Christopher Gattel. “It was then that I started working with choreographers who really changed my mind about what could be done with choreography: how you could tell a story and make people laugh or cry… it just blew me away.
When Gatel was offered a job as a choreographer Let me go!He thought it wasn’t real. “I actually got a DM on my Instagram from Cinco Paul, the creator of the show,” she says. “At first I thought it was a joke … he sent me scripts and scores and I said, ‘This is a gift.’
The series follows Melissa and Josh, played by Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key, two doctors who embark on a backpacking journey to save their relationship. When they get lost, they end up in the magical city of Shmygadun, where they get trapped in a musical until they find true love. Gattel is nominated for three routines in the series: “Corn Puddin”, “Tribulation” and “With Of Your Heart”.
“[Paul] I really scaled it down to keep it truly vintage, as well as paying homage to the golden age, “says Gattel.” It was a really fun challenge to bring two people from the modern world into this one, one who loves it and one who hates it. , and involve them both.
Paul was inspired by Gattel’s work. Praise Caesar!, and wanted him to use a similar choreographic style. “I like very long shots, I like to shoot them from head to toe, because many are so elaborate that it takes work away from the dancers who have trained to master those shots… I think the form is really appreciated. When you see the whole body and when you see the long cuts that show the work done by the dancers. They could do that whole number if asked, and I think it takes a lot of discipline and hard work. “
Gatel started working Let me go! “With ‘Corn Puddin’ because ‘it captured the spirit of the whole show,’” he says. “For me, that number was my starting point.” Her choice to host “Tribulation” was due less to the technical moves and more to the incredible perfection of Kristin Chenoweth: “I wouldn’t say there was a lot of technical choreography, but it was a five-minute one-shot,” she says.[I thought] If anyone can do it, it’s Kristin Chenoweth. She first took it in the studio. We were planning on getting that number all day and she did it in the first half of her. Gattel also performed “With All Of Your Heart” as it was her favorite song on the show due to her love dance. “Seeing these kinds of guys dancing on a table directed by Ariana [DeBose] Anyone who goes further, “he says,” has simply accomplished what the Golden Age did so well. You are in this natural environment and suddenly, all of a sudden, you enter this moment of musical film “.
