“Legendary” choreographer Tanisha Scott talks about bringing homes into “performance mode” to amaze the judges

as a choreographer Legendary, Tanisha Scott’s job is to make sure every house moves smoothly and ready to amaze the judges. With just three days to get the ball ready for the house, you need to make sure it’s ready and complete the task.

Legendary It’s an HBO reality show in which ten houses in a nine-ball ballroom compete for a $ 100,000 prize. Each dance has a theme such as Animal Queen or Hip-Opera and a challenge in which the choreography emphasizes a specific element of fashion.

The competition will be led by Dashaun Wesley and will be judged by Jamila Jamil, Leomi Maldonado, Lowe Roach and Keke Palmer. Every referee has something special to look for in every ball, so Scott knows that every performance of his choreography needs to be clean, sophisticated, hip and fun.

Deadline: We will only briefly see in each episode, how much time do you actually spend in each house?

Tanish Scott: I’m with them often, but our response time is very short between conceptualization and stage performance. Let’s look at maybe three days and the third day when I’m really in performance mode to do this ball, we’ve already talked about the next ball. You don’t know who will get hurt, but we also need to know what we’ll do next. At first I always give them the time to figure out what they are going to do: what their concept is, what kind of smart thing to do, what kind of elements … and then I go to them and count. . Are you trying to do it? What do you mean? What’s Your Look? What is happening? And I basically help them design everything so they’re good enough on stage.

I’m the one who helps them understand what they can do, what they can’t do, and I also remind them what judges are looking for. For example, “You got caught on the last ball, so you need to make sure you excel in this area to show that you are listening to what they are saying” and “Hey, this is a challenge, who is it?” The strongest person to do that. ? Will you really implement it? And then: “Enough?”

Deadline: what are the judges looking for?

Scott: So the judges really have four interesting perspectives. You need to understand who you are talking to and what it is about. For Jemila, when she says she wants “cleanliness”, she just wants to see things in order. So if you have four people on the opposite side of the stage doing different things and moving around in different ways, it looks messy. Even if you do your choreography correctly, your movement just wants to be established and subdivided into an image. He’s a tight person, and if there’s too much to do or too many free styles, no matter how good they are, it doesn’t feel like a complete unit.

Leiomy, without a doubt, is a skill, a superstar and a choreographer – he’s an icon, so he can do all three. He not only creates different movements, but he also creates choreography to know how the choreography should be and he knows how dynamic things can be. If he did it, he hopes you can too. He knows almost all the competitors and if he doesn’t know he can quickly indicate their abilities and what their strengths are. Law wants fashion, fashion, fashion and he just needs to be excited and confused. You just have to go in and watch the show.

And as for Keke, he’s looking for fun because he’s new to the ballroom. You want all the balls to react the same way they were first introduced in the ballroom. For him, everything is entertainment, like movements and choreography. He wants it all just because it comes from the actor’s point of view. Jameela comes from the fashion actress point of view, Law comes from the fashion point of view and Leiomy is masterfully everywhere.

Deadline: Obviously every house has a background in ballroom dance and ballroom dancing, but it seems that sometimes the connection with the choreography of the whole house is broken.

ScottThere are many different categories in a ballroom and not all houses are show houses, so those are all the details. Some just walk on the catwalk, others just walk on the face … You have so many different categories. Just because you’re part of a ballroom doesn’t mean you can really act like a housewife. The part that makes this show so amazing is that it’s not comfortable. You have someone walking on Sex Siren, someone walking on Face and someone doing Vogue Fem all together, and they need to combine that image and make it all come true. Everyone has specific strengths and has been doing something for so long that it can be difficult for them to start doing something new. This is what I love about the show; Everyone thinks they can make it, and then when you walk in, it’s like, “Wow, good. This is difficult.”
