Coronation Street bosses have announced that a major music star will be joining the ITV soap opera, as a new character who will bring an unexpected surprise to one of the venues.

Jodie Prenger, who won the BBC talent show I’d Do Anything in 2008 and starred as Nancy in Oliver’s West End production, will join the soap opera as Glenda, the sister of undertaker George Shuttleworth.

Known for playing Miss Hannigan in Annie, Shirley Valentine on a recent UK theater tour and the national production of A Taste Of Honey, Jodie has called her new role a “wish list” moment.

She said, “I know I sound silly, but it’s been on my wish list to be on Coronation Street since I was little.

“It’s an honor, it’s really a very special moment in my life. To be part of something my family and I have loved for so long ”.

“And what a character, oh I must say, is part of a total dream.”

Glenda is set to change her brother George’s fortunes after the gravedigger recently struggled to keep up with the arrival of his childhood stalker, Frank Bardsley.

However, Glenda’s unexpected arrival on the cobblestones will surprise George, leaving viewers wondering how life will change for Weatherfield’s undertaker.

That’s not all, as it looks like Glenda will be staying for some time as she joins a long list of fan favorites to get behind the helm of Rovers Return.

“I can’t wait for you to meet the funny and sassy Glenda, George Shuttleworth’s sister. I already love Tony Maudsley, what a guy! Jodi said.

“Your first day on the cobblestones is one of the most heartbreaking experiences you have ever had and everyone was so gloriously charming, kind and welcoming. It was, and still is, everything I hoped for and more ”.

Jodie has already started shooting scenes for the episodes airing in August and has said she will draw on her previous acting experience on cruise ships as part of her role.

Prior to Jodie’s Coronation Street debut, producer Iain MacLeod said, “Glenda comes fresh from cruise ships with an exotic touch and quickly makes best friends and foes alike.

“The character is very funny and echoes the classic Coronation Street women of the past.

“Jodie is a fabulous talent and we are all very happy to have her on board. She has been very Corrie from the moment she stepped onto the set and I think viewers will love her. “
