Patsy Kensit feared she had dementia when she suffered from memory loss as a symptom of menopause.

The former Emmerdale actress, 54, entered the menopause cycle at the age of 45 after undergoing an emergency hysterectomy.

She said, “I woke up in the ICU and didn’t know what I was doing, because I was there. I was in menopause.”

Former lead singer of the ’80s band Eighth Wonder added that she always had a good memory and struggled to understand why she had suddenly become forgetful.

Speaking in Postcards from Middle Ages, Kensit said: “I’ve always been proud to have a great memory because I’ve learned scripts all my life, it’s like a muscle.

“I didn’t remember a conversation, just a mental fog… I thought I had dementia. I went to a therapist and they gave me the HRT patch. It wasn’t great. “

Since then, she has been busy talking about menopause to help other women cope with similar problems.

She said: “My commitment is to bridge the gap between pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women, who have always felt that we have nothing in common.

“As a young man I had no idea what was going to happen, but now I am proud to share information to educate and inform women of all ages on how to go through this transition without fear or judgment.”

He added: “If I have any advice, it is this: be honest about what’s going on. Half of all humans will go through menopause, there is nothing to be ashamed of, and the more we understand and honest with each other, the more we all benefit from it. “
