Wes Anderson, it seems, has long established itself in a comfortable niche: modest budgets, a dedicated audience, recognizable style and stable results in the cash register. But in recent years the formula was no longer working.
The new film by the director, The Phoenician Scheme, showed a catastrophic weak cash register and became the most unprofitable project for Anderson since the “Train to Darjing”.
To date, the “Phoenician schedule” has collected everything 35 million dollars around the world – 18 million in the US and 17 million abroad. At the same time, the budget of the photo was about 30 millionSuch as the two previous projects of the director – “French Herald” and “Cities of Asteroids”.
Of these two, only the latter was able to pass a figure of 50 million, and the “French messenger” stopped at around 45. Apparently the “Phoenician schedule” would not achieve that.
The film started in a limited rent – only about 300 sites in the United States – and now almost completely depends on the foreign public and future digital releases. This is despite the fact that the film had a status festival in Cannes and fairly decent reviews: 78% on Rotten Tomato (7.0 in Kinopoisk) and praising assessments, where critics noted the patented “decorative pretententousnity” of production and complex structure.

In De Cast – Benisio del Toro, Michael Sera, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Reese Ahmed and even Mia Tripplon, daughter Kate Winslet. But the star names have not stored: the audience just seems to have ended interest.
Against the background of this failure, the contrast with Anderson’s short films for Netflix, which were accepted much warmer, is especially noticeable. One of them – the “beautiful story of Henry Shugar” – even brought an “Oscar” to Anderson. But a full meter again confirms that his brand style, once fresh, did not work for everyone today.
