Stephen Spielberg wanted to make the most realistic film about the war – without beautification, without compromises, with a complete immersion of the viewer in the horror of what happens. And he reached his.
“Save the ordinary Ryan” collected a hectic cash register, received five Oscars and became the most successful film about the Second World War. The film was called a masterpiece immediately after the premiere, and this was the rare case when everyone agreed with this opinion: critics, spectators, veterans. But even with all this status, “Ryan” came across a heavy censorship – and not just in one country.
In India, they generally refused to release the film. The National Council demanded that Spielberg cut a number of scenes, supposedly due to excessive cruelty. The director refused to make concessions. Fundamentally, he did not reign the final version of the photo, not even despite the possible ban. As a result, the Minister of the Interior himself intervened after personal viewing of the film, he gave the green light and the tape still went out in Indian cinemas without a single account.

But in Malaysia the story ended differently. A few days before the release of “Save Private Ryan” in the cinema, the censors demanded to cut nine scenes, mainly the strict episodes of the battle. And again, Spielberg refused to change everything. As a result, the film was forbidden – he just didn’t come out. Officially. Although of course pirate copies appeared almost immediately.
This was already the second case: a few years earlier in Malaysia there were also problems with another film by Spielberg – the Schindler list. The director then agreed to reduce individual points, so that the photo received a rental certificate. But for Ryan he no longer compromised.
