Neve Campbell recently announced that she will not be returning for the sixth installment of the Scream series due to a salary dispute.

The 48-year-old star, who has played the lead role of Sidney Prescott since the first movie in 1996, said in a statement that she needed to show her “value” as an actress.

And now 52-year-old actor Matthew Lillard, who played Stu Macher in the first movie of the horror movie, comes to the defense of the actress and compares him to Tom Cruise.

Addressing issues with his salary, he added: “I felt that the offer that was made to me did not match the value I brought to the franchise.”

“It was a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You have always supported me incredibly. I will always be grateful to you and what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”

Campbell, 48, has played lead actor Sidney Prescott in all five Scream movies since 1996, the most recent of which to star in this year’s reboot.

The film’s most recent revival brought back original stars Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, making $140 million at the box office against a $24 million budget.

Production on the sixth slasher movie is expected to begin this summer, and Courtney is still busy reprising her role as Gale Weathers.

Newcomers to the Friends star from the latest reboot are joined by Melissa Barrera (Sam), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy), Mason Gooding (Chad), and Jenna Ortega (Tara).

Neve was reportedly paid $1,500,000 for the first movie, $3,500,000 for the second, and $4,000,000 for the third.

It’s unclear how much he earned from the fourth and fifth installments of the franchise, although it’s common to do “back-end work” in Hollywood when it comes to salaries.

A backend deal usually ends up with the protagonist cutting the salary in exchange for a percentage of the proceeds that would be very profitable for something like Scream.
