Sometimes you don’t have to spend millions to make a movie good.

Science fiction has always been the breakthrough genre in cinema that realized human fantasies about something new and unknown – whether it was the distant future with the development of technology or the conquest of space and the battle against aliens.

Often, science fiction filmmakers rely on the magic of special effects to bring the impossible and the unimaginable to life on screen. However, there are also films that do this without excessive use of computer graphics and special effects. We’ve rounded up 10 sci-fi films that were made on fairly modest budgets, and they all turned out great.

Making a modern blockbuster is a very expensive affair. For the sake of clarity, let’s take James Cameron’s 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water. The budget was $350 million.

When the viewer comes to the cinema and sees all those special effects and computer graphics on the screen, he naturally understands where such a huge amount of money comes from. But you don’t have to spend so many millions on a movie to tell a good story, and our selection proves that perfectly.

For example, 2004’s The Detonator was filmed for just $7,000. Even if you factor in almost twenty years of inflation compared to the second Avatar, you still won’t get that amount. And this didn’t make the movie any worse. Nolan fans will agree, because in ‘Detonator’ the time machine games are very reminiscent of the typical atmosphere of Nolan films.
