The ending has always been controversial.
An entire decade has passed since the premiere of the action-adventure film Edge of Tomorrow.
With all the merits of the plot, the ending is perhaps the only thing that divided the audience into two camps, which are still debating it.
How the movie ends

In the theatrical version, Cage, like Rita, loses the ability to reset the day after receiving a blood transfusion. Despite this, the team does not abandon the original plan and proceeds to kill Omega.
Upon reaching the enemy, the mortally wounded major detonates a grenade, but is caught in the Mimic’s blood. He wakes up as he approaches headquarters, the military reports that the aliens are retreating, but Rita is alive and once again does not remember him.
What was the alternative

The film’s screenwriter, Christopher McQuarrie, said that in another version, despite the ban, a member of the squad killed Alpha, triggering the time loop.
Humans were once again taken a step back, as the aliens were now aware of the impending attack. This extra challenge can be exhausting not only for the characters, but more importantly for the audience.
Therefore, the makers decided not to extend the timing.
Which fans are not happy about

Some viewers were disappointed by the happy ending, as it not only violated the rules of the plot, but also neutralized the value of the soldiers’ heroism.
To this, McQuarrie simply replied: “We weren’t interested in a realistic and hard ending. It should have ended differently.”
But Hiroshi Sakurazaki’s original work was much cooler.
At the end of the light novel on which the film is based, Rita becomes the final link between the Mimickers and humans, and Cage understands that he must kill her.
