Russian viewers didn’t appreciate the idea either – giving the film only 6.6 out of 10.

Tim Burton has been holding his own for decades and constantly appears on the lists of the most successful directors of our time, but even he is not immune to failures – and this is evident from Burton’s most disastrous project, based on a relatively successful soap opera from the 1960s. The comedy melodrama “Dark Shadows” with an all-star cast, released in 2012, failed at the box office and was not liked by critics at all, and is still considered one of the worst films of the creator of “Beetlejuice”.

This remake is still considered Burton’s worst project, even surpassed by the original 1966 series.

Burton was inspired to create ‘Dark Shadows’ by the Gothic soap opera of the same name, which aired from 1966 to 1971. The plot revolves around Barnabas Collins, the wealthy and powerful owner of the Collinwood estate, who is living his best life until the evil witch Angelique Bochar turns him into a vampire and reburies him.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is accidentally released from his crypt, and he finds himself in a completely unusual year for him: 1972. The hero returns to Collinwood to find the estate in considerable disrepair, and his descendants acting rather strangely and as if they are hiding something.

“Dark Shadows” starring Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green and Chloë Grace Moretz wasn’t saved even by its all-star cast – the film collects $245 million with a budget of 150 million.

The ratings also proved fitting – the film only has a positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes 35% from critics based on 263 reviews and 46% from the audience. Many called the film too complex and confusing to understand all the relationships between the characters, and critics didn’t even appreciate the jokes, calling them flat and tiresome.
