Horror has become less scary.
On September 10th, the American remake of the Danish horror hit Don’t Tell Nobody was finally released in theaters. The new version of the film stars James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNary and is directed by James Watkins.
The American remake did well at the box office, grossing $42 million against a $12 million budget. It tells the story of a married couple who come to visit their new acquaintances and are accidentally ambushed by serial killers.
The film was very well received 83% “fresh” from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but the remake already has one prominent hater: the original film’s director, Christian Tafdrup.
The Danish director was embarrassed that Watkins changed the original ending of his film, which allowed the main characters to survive.
“When I saw the film, I realized they would never make a picture where the characters are stoned to death, like they are in our film. These people have to fight for their families and defeat the bad guys… It’s a kind of happy ending, and it’s deeply ingrained in American culture.” – said Tafdrup.
The original Danish film was a crowd pleaser for its uncompromising brutality, so Watkins’ decision to change the film’s bloody ending to a more positive one apparently angered Tafdrup.
But the audience sided with the American film. The remake of “Don’t Tell Nobody” received a decent rating from Kinopoisk users. 6.7 points, and the Danish film deserves everything 5.7 points – it is clear which version of the film appealed more to Russians.
