Disney/20th Century Studios has released the first clip of Predator: Badlandsand wastes no time throwing us into chaos. The preview throws us into the heart of a brutal showdown in which Dek, the Yautja warrior at the center of the story, is attacked by ferocious plant-like creatures.
The film, directed by Dan Trachtenbergserves as a sequel to the acclaimed film Prey and takes the Predator universe further into uncharted territory. This time, the tables are turned when the Predator itself becomes prey.
Speaking with IGN, Trachtenberg shared details about Dek’s futuristic arsenal, revealing just how much the franchise has evolved.
“It starts with a bunch of really cool gadgets. I’ve always thought there was a connection between the Predator franchise and James Bond. Part of what we like about going to see it is: what kind of gadgets does it have?”
“And I was stuck in the past with my entries into the franchise, with Prey taking place in the 1700s and Killer of Killers taking place in different decades. But all in the past, so I always had to think, what would his weapons be if they were a little further before what we’re used to seeing?”
“Now I’m in the future. So he has laser bows, a cool lightsaber with multiple modes. His sword that he uses, he holds it like a classic knight or samurai would, but then he changes it to a different mode and he can use it almost like a glaive.”
Another important change for Badlands is his assessment. For the first time in franchise history (outside of AvP), a Predator movie will not have an R rating. Producer Ben Rosenblatt explained how the team managed to carry out plenty of carnage while keeping things within PG-13 territory.
“We’ll see where it goes, but our hope is that it can be a PG-13 that feels like an R,” Rosenblatt said. “That’s our hope. And really, what matters is simply being able to broaden the audience for a film like this.”
“We don’t have humans in the film and therefore we don’t have human red blood,” he continued. “So hopefully that plays to our advantage. We’re going to give it as much as we can within those limitations, and we think we’ll be able to do some really scary creepy things. But in colors other than red.”
In this story set in the future, Dek’s enemies are all alien in nature, this time no human victims. The only humanoid figures are the Weyland-Yutani synths, who add a cool sci-fi touch that subtly ties into the larger alien universe.
Set on a hostile and remote planet, Predator: Badlands follows a young outcast Predator (played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) who teams up with Thia on a perilous journey in search of the ultimate adversary. The film promises to expand and redefine the Predator mythos, giving fans something new while remaining true to the primal, survivalist spirit that has made the franchise iconic.
Predator: Badlands will be released in theaters on November 7, playing in IMAX, Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, Cinemark XD, 4DX, ScreenX and other premium formats.
